Exo BaitcastHere is an article to show that I am a novice angler. I’ve had a Baitcasting rod and the best Shimano spinning reel for a long time, and have tried them with a lot of success, however, it was only recently that I learned that Baitcasting reels come with brakes. I had no idea about that, and since I was fishing at the time, I didn’t feel I needed to research it. Gene produces several great ice fishing videos, and the film “How to set up a Baitcasting reel” revealed my ignorance of Baitcasting breaks to the light. If I encounter something in different fishing lines that I am unaware of, I usually let my curiosity get over me, and I investigate until I feel I understand what I want to learn. I realized that I needed to expand my knowledge after I did not know the brakes for Baitcasting. I read numerous articles and watched many videos on YouTube about the Braking system for Baitcasting reels and fishing tips.

Most of the videos explain the method you need to use to brake your vehicle and ways to change them (i.e., “turn off the brakes and adjust your spool’s tension until your lure is falling into the floor slowly before turning some of the centrifugal brakes and the magnetic brakes around halfway before casting .”). It’s not enough for me. It’s not enough to give me directions on what to do. I would like to know why I must perform something as I’m told to. Click here for further information.

2. The magnetic brakes.
3. The spool tension adjustment.
4. The thumb.

Most of the videos I watched showed that I could adjust these areas, but the only thing I couldn’t get was an explanation of how each component influences the Baitcasting and fishing reel.

Centrifugal Centrifugal Brakes

Centrifugal brakes work only during the first part of the cast. Consider the process that occurs when you make a casting. Your rod is used to slingshot some mass (lure and leader line) toward a specific target. The spool will begin to turn at a rapid speed when you cast your bait into the distance. If your spool spins at a higher speed than the lure’s speed and your line is spinning at a higher rate, it will break loose inside the reel and fishing rods, leaving you with a backlash.

Think of it as cooked spaghetti served on a plate. What happens if you push the spaghetti from one end to the other? It will just pile up on your plate. However, if the opposite side of your spaghetti is drawn from somewhere (the lure, the weight) at the exact time you push (the cast), it stays straight.

The centrifugal brake controls the speed, which allows the line to be pulled off at the exact rate of speed of the cast. When the spool spins, it will cause gravity to make the brakes of the centrifugal type extend out from the middle of the spool and then be able to run on a shelf within the side that is on top of the reel, much like how brake pads function on drum brakes in automobiles.

Most spinning rods and reels come with six brake pads that you can switch on and off, typically by turning the levers on each brake. By locking each brake, you’re instructing the reel on what number of brake pads it should release to allow them to run through the drum. A lower number of brakes means a longer spinning of the spool, while more excellent brakes will increase the spool’s speed. The disadvantage of centrifugal brakes is that they have to remove the side panels of the reel and rods for fishing to adjust the brakes.

The Magnetic Brakes in2023
