Braking The Confusion on BaitCaster Reel in 2023
I am sorry to say you find this article somewhat dull.
Exo BaitcastHere is an article to show that I am a novice angler. I’ve had a Baitcasting rod and the best Shimano spinning reel for a long time, and have tried them with a lot of success, however, it was only recently that I learned that Baitcasting reels come with brakes. I had no idea about that, and since I was fishing at the time, I didn’t feel I needed to research it. I first heard about the brake system when I watched a YouTube video by Gene Jensen on the “Flukemaster” YouTube channel. If you have the chance visit his channel at Flukemaster. Braking The Confusion on BaitCaster Reel in 2023.

Gene produces several great ice fishing videos, and the film “How to set up a Baitcasting reel” revealed my ignorance of Baitcasting breaks to the light. If I encounter something in different fishing lines that I am unaware of, I usually let my curiosity get over me, and I investigate until I feel I understand what I want to learn. I realized that I needed to expand my knowledge after I did not know the brakes for Baitcasting. I read numerous articles and watched many videos on YouTube about the Braking system for Baitcasting reels and fishing tips.

Most of the videos explain the method you need to use to brake your vehicle and ways to change them (i.e., “turn off the brakes and adjust your spool’s tension until your lure is falling into the floor slowly before turning some of the centrifugal brakes and the magnetic brakes around halfway before casting .”). It’s not enough for me. It’s not enough to give me directions on what to do. I would like to know why I must perform something as I’m told to. Click here for further information.

SpoolingAs an illustration… It is the case that I get told to fill rods and reel for redfish Baitcasting by using a line coming from the very top of the spool rather than being drawn down from below the spool. If I’m not sure of the reason behind this and why it’s not clear, it’s harder to accept the advice. In this instance, the line is memories, and loading it onto it from above allows the line and reel to co-exist in harmony. If you load it at the lower end of the spool will work into the memory line, and the bar and ultra-light spinning reel will conflict, which will cause backlashes to become more common.
BacklashThe goal of any braking system used on Baitcasting reels is to prevent the most feared backlash. A backlash can be a significant discomfort in the back because it creates a mess in your rotation that typically takes some time to clear. It can be a lengthy and often painful time. I’ll say, if you repeatedly do this, it will result in throwing your rod around in total dismay.
What I have learned from the internet and in the video clips can be seen in the videos is there are generally four distinct zones that are in play when using Baitcasting and spinning reels. The four areas include:
1. The centrifugal brakes.
2. The magnetic brakes.
3. The spool tension adjustment.
4. The thumb.
Most of the videos I watched showed that I could adjust these areas, but the only thing I couldn’t get was an explanation of how each component influences the Baitcasting and fishing reel.
Centrifugal Centrifugal Brakes
Centrifugal brakes work only during the first part of the cast. Consider the process that occurs when you make a casting. Your rod is used to slingshot some mass (lure and leader line) toward a specific target. The spool will begin to turn at a rapid speed when you cast your bait into the distance. If your spool spins at a higher speed than the lure’s speed and your line is spinning at a higher rate, it will break loose inside the reel and fishing rods, leaving you with a backlash.
Think of it as cooked spaghetti served on a plate. What happens if you push the spaghetti from one end to the other? It will just pile up on your plate. However, if the opposite side of your spaghetti is drawn from somewhere (the lure, the weight) at the exact time you push (the cast), it stays straight.

The centrifugal brake controls the speed, which allows the line to be pulled off at the exact rate of speed of the cast. When the spool spins, it will cause gravity to make the brakes of the centrifugal type extend out from the middle of the spool and then be able to run on a shelf within the side that is on top of the reel, much like how brake pads function on drum brakes in automobiles.
Most spinning rods and reels come with six brake pads that you can switch on and off, typically by turning the levers on each brake. By locking each brake, you’re instructing the reel on what number of brake pads it should release to allow them to run through the drum. A lower number of brakes means a longer spinning of the spool, while more excellent brakes will increase the spool’s speed. The disadvantage of centrifugal brakes is that they have to remove the side panels of the reel and rods for fishing to adjust the brakes.
The Magnetic Brakes in2023
The one end of the baitcasting reel. There might be a dial. The dial turned one way reduces the distance from magnets from the spool. Turning the dial in the opposite method will expand the space between the interests and the spool. They are known as magnetic brakes. They work by the principle they are closer to the spool.
The further the brakes get to the spool, the more the spool slows within the cast. And by default, the further away the magnets are from the spool, the easier it is for the spool to spin. Magnetic brakes only function with the initial part of the casting and generally work similarly to centrifugal brakes. The only difference is that you can alter the magnetic brakes simply by using the dial and without removing any side plates.
The Spool Tension Adjustment ( Braking The Confusion on BaitCaster Reel in 2023)
On the side of the reel for offshore and inshore for fish is the handle, and there is one small knob that can be rotated. This is the tension of the spool. This adjustment should not be considered a substitute for the brakes discussed earlier. In reality, you could cause damage to your reel by applying too much tension to the spool.
The magnetic and centrifugal brakes are used for the initial part of the cast. The spool tension is activated at the final part of your cast when the lure ceases to move and the spool is still turning. The tension adjustment is utilized to stop the spool shaft while the lure is destroyed when it hits the water. Fishing lures for saltwater
The Thumb | Braking The Confusion on BaitCaster Reel in 2023
The above is intended to limit the usage of the thumb to the minimum. However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t utilize your thumb. In some instances, your cast might be lost, or you might encounter an unexpected blast of wind that hurls your lure back toward you. If your reel isn’t in a position to stop the spool before the lure has stopped, you’ll need to put your thumb on the spool to stop it and stop the backlash. Read more
The Manual Braking System of 2023
The manual brake mechanism is the most crucial of the brakes you can find on your reel for bait casting. Every angler wants to become proficient in this area as quickly as possible since it permits the casting of long distances. This method uses the thumb to feather the spool to control the spool’s movement.

Feathering is applying pressure to the spool using your thumb to slow the spool as you cast. A lot of experts prefer this method in comparison to other methods because it gives you a higher level of control as well as longer casting distances.
Most of the time to fish, all brakes are shut off using this method. The spool spins at a rapid rate with all the brakes off. If you’re casting against the wind, keeping some brakes in place is advised to prevent backlash.
In certain instances, the spool spins to catch more fish with lures than the line is thrown away. This requires a careful application of pressure using the thumb to prevent backlash. It takes lots of practice to perfect it. Even the most experienced people get a little, sometimes a bit of backlash.
A beginner should ensure that the brakes are set at the right level and gradually work their way to lower settings as you gain confidence. Utilize the other braking techniques, including feathering when bait for beach fishing against the wind. Be sure to force your spool as the lure is about the land on the water.
Despite all precautions and practices, a backlash or a massive birds-nest tangle will happen. The earlier you master the various ways to remove bird nests from the tangle, the more effective. There are a lot of excellent videos on YouTube to help you untangle birds’ nests. This can save you a lot of time and stress.
When you first start using the brakes in 2023
Once comfortable casting without backlash, you can adjust the tension knob on the spool. Keep the rod at a 45-degree angle. Then, slowly release the tension on the rod until it drops in its own time (no spinning or wiggles of your rod). If the lure touches the ground, the spool should cease immediately. If it does not, repeat the process until it happens.
After you’ve worked hard to develop an excellent feel for things, eventually, you’ll be able to reduce the number of brakes that you employ as well as the amount of magnetic force used. In time, you’ll be able to relieve the spool’s tension to the point that it’s completely gone.
I hope I’ve made you aware of some of what is happening to the Baitcasting reel’s brakes. Lines tight, the Amateur Angler
